Islamic New Year’s Day
The Islamic Lunar calendar is counted from the year of the Hijra, the departure of the Holy Prophet Mohammed (PBuH) from Makkah to Medina. The current year is 1427.

Ashoora
Day on which Sayyedona Hussein, the Holy Prophet’s (PBuH) grandson was killed. Tenth day of Muharram. Significant day of mourning for Shias. Bahrain closes down all offices.

Modest ceremony of remembrance.

Lailat Al Mi’raj
Literally the night journey and ascent; the night when the Prophet ascended to heaven on a Buraq, Muslims learned the fixed ritual of prayers since that night.

Lailat Al Bara’a
Night of repentance; a fortnight before the month of fasting (Ramadhan). Some Muslims begin fasting on this day.
